Using science monkeys twice

So I never thought about it before and I'm not sure how it makes me feel, but...

The team used a microscope lens to project video images onto retinas that had been removed from macaque [monkeys] euthanized in HIV-related experiments...

That's from "Spying Vision Cells : Eye's motion detectors are finally found" in this week's Science News.

I suppose it's a good thing they don't just give the monkeys HIV, then HIV drugs, then kill them and throw them out with the day's garbage...

I would like to continue reading this article, but I can't seem to get past that sentence!
